Welcome to the mid-season awards for the 2013 MLB Season....
AMERICAN LEAGUE:
AL MVP: Miguel Cabrera- Leading in two of the three Triple Crown stats (behind Chris Davis in home runs) and sporting a .457 on base average, Miguel is looking to be a back to back winner in the American League's MVP. In a close second, Chris Davis of Baltimore.
AL CY YOUNG: Max Scherzer- Dominating with a WHIP under 1 and second in the league in strike outs, Max is also leading the league in wins. He's finally lived up fully to the hype. In a close second place is Yu Darvish.
AL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Nick Franklin- The second baseman for the Mariners is an early favorite, but there is no clear standout compared to the National League. Hopefully for this award, someone steps up in the second half. Franklin is not doing bad with a .288 batting average on a poor hitting team, but it is a weak rookie class for the AL this year.
AL BREAKOUT PLAYER: Chris Davis- A top ten hitter in the Triple Crown categories, he's carrying the Baltimore offense on his back and smashing home runs left and right. As of today he is at thirty-three home runs which is tied with his single season high. His teammate Manny Machado is a good second place on here. He gets on base for Davis and is on pace to break the single season doubles record this year.
AL ALL STAR TEAM: C Joe Mauer, 1B Chris Davis, 2B Robinson Cano, 3B Miguel Cabrera, SS Jed Lowrie, OF Jacob Ellsbury, OF Mike Trout, OF Nelson Cruz, SP Max Scherzer, SP Yu Darvish, SP Bartolo Colon, SP Felix Hernandez, SP Chris Sale, RP Joe Nathan, RP Grant Balfour
NATIONAL LEAGUE
NL MVP: Carlos Gonzalez- Leading the National League in home runs isn't his only achievement. He's played Gold Glove level defense, already has fifteen stolen bases, and a .300 plus batting average. He can very easily end up being a 30-30 player this season. Paul Goldschmidt comes in second place with similar numbers, except in stolen bases and runs scored.
NL CY YOUNG: Clayton Kershaw is the pick, but this is a very tight category. Kershaw has a WHIP below 1 and an ERA below 2 while dominating with strike outs. It will be tough to fend other pitcher such as Patrick Corbin, Jordan Zimmermann, Adam Wainwright, and Jason Grilli all have legitimate claims on the Cy Young title as well.
NL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Jean Segura wins this award, although many will argue for players such as Puig, Miller, Fernandez, and Gattis. Segura plays shortstop, is in the top five in the National League in Batting Average and Stolen Bases, and shows enough pop to possibly hit over twenty this season. This could be a different result at the end of the season, but at the half way point, it's Segura.
NL BREAKOUT PLAYER: Patrick Corbin is 10-1 with a 2.40 ERA and a sub 1 WHIP. A case for Zimmermann could be made here, but Corbin wasn't expected to be half this good and he could have been even better. In June he went five starts in a row with an ERA in the two's and still did not receive a win.
NL ALL STAR TEAM: C Yadier Molina, 1B Paul Goldschmidt, 2B Matt Carpenter, 3B David Wright, SS Jean Segura, OF Carlos Gonzalez, OF Domonic Brown, OF Carlos Gomez, SP Clayton Kershaw, Patrick Corbin, Jordann Zimmermann, Adam Wainwright, Matt Harvey, RP Jason Grilli, RP Craig Kimbrel

Pre-Season MLB 2013 Predictions
It's that time of year again when players on most teams believe for a second that their team has a chance to make playoffs and maybe the World Series this year. For half the league, this feeling last until May when they realize they were just a tad overly optimistic. From here, some players play to stat pad, some play to get traded to a contender, but many just play for the money. Well here are my predictions for the 2013 season before the "flies start dropping" already.
AL East:
1. Toronto Blue Jays-This is the hardest division in baseball to pick. Every team in this division can end up .500+, but I doubt anyone will runaway with this division. Every team in the AL East can end up first or last depending on the circumstances. With the Blue Jays pick ups, I will put them as the AL East winner, but this can easily change if their players run into injury problems (e.g Jose Reyes).
2. New York Yankees- The Yankees are no longer the clear cut winner of the AL East. With aging players and injuries, the team is in a decline. Their current disabled list is a former all-star team of their own (e.g Jeter, Granderson, A-Rod, Teixeira, Pineda). The Yankees always seem to find a way to win though, so don't count them out.
3. Tampa Bay Rays- With David Price leading the way and a solid pitching staff behind him, the Rays will still be a dominant team when playing the rest of the American League.
4. Baltimore Orioles- Their pitching staff will regress a little after a superb season last year.
5. Boston Red Sox- Still in transition, the Red Sox are starting with a new manager and some new faces such as close Joel Hanrahan. Power hitter David Ortiz is aging and free agent flops such as Carl Crawford have moved on to other teams.
AL Central:
1. Detroit Tigers- The only real dominant team in the Central this season. Like the AL East the other teams can end up anywhere between second and fifth place, but unlike the East, it's not because of the amount of talent in the division.
2. Kansas City Royals- Finally after being in rebuilding mode (since the 80's), their prospects and younger players and bound to shine through. Hosmer, Gordon, Moustakas, and Butler will lead the offense, while new additions to the pitching staff such as "Big Game" James Shields will solidify the pitching.
3. Cleveland Indians- Terry Francona is not enough to move the Indians in the right direction. The Indians are full of players that never lived up to the hype.
4. Minnesota Twins- Led by Joe Mauer, the Twins can't top the Central like they once did. The starting pitching isn't strong enough and many of their hitters are inexperienced.
5. Chicago White Sox- With no significant additions during the off season, the White Sox will remain average at best. Tyler Flowers will finally get the chance to shine after AJ's departure. The White Sox biggest off season addition was Jeff Keppinger, which is nothing to brag about.
AL West:
1. Oakland A's- After the A's ninety-four wins last season, the youngsters now have a season under their belts and the sting of a lackluster playoffs on their minds. A good blend of power, speed, and pitching will lead the West.
2. Texas Rangers- Still with some good pitching and youngsters on their way up, the Rangers will just hold off the Angels. The Rangers can fall to the Angels though if key players end up getting injured.
3. ANAHEIM Angels- The Angels went on a shopping spree this year, adding Josh Hamilton and even paying Vernon Wells twenty-eight million dollars to not play on their team. If they can stay healthy, the Angels can leap frog over the Rangers for second place.
4. Seattle Mariners- No last place finish for the Mariners. With the new addition of the Astros to the division, the Mariners will have to try hard (or not) to end up in last. No stand out players/captains to lead the team, the Mariners are just coasting by this year.
5. Houston Astros- New jerseys and a new league won't help much. The team has good role players, but also suffer from lack of star power.
NL East:
1. Washington Nationals- The former Expos have finally solidified themselves as the team to beat in the East. Solid pitching led by Strasburg, Gio Gonzales and Zimmerman mixed with the hitting of players such as Ian Desmond and Ryan Zimmerman will lead the Nationals to the divisional win.
2. Atlanta Braves- Regaining solid pitching and gaining a pair of Upton's, the Braves will end up in second place.
3. New York Mets- There isn't much to say positive about the Mets this season. Wright leads a lackluster team in offense and the pitching staff has once again lost Johan Santana. Rookie call ups are the only positives left this season for the franchise.
4. Philadelphia Phillies- The Phillies start the season with Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, and Roy Halladay healthy for the first time in a couple of seasons. If they play up to past levels, they could take second place, but more likely than not, they'll end up in the middle.
5. Miami Marlins- Once again the Marlins franchise had a fire sale and gave up all of their noticeable players except Giancarlo Stanton. Back to the bottom of the basement for the Marlins.
NL Central:
1. Milwaukee Brewers- After finishing the second half of last year strong, the Brewers have so many positives on their team, it would be hard to bet against them. Lending thirteen players to the World Baseball Classic could possibly hurt the franchise on their way to the top.
2. St. Louis Cardinals- A solid team, but not the same as they were in their past when they had legitimate star power on the field.
3. Cincinnati Reds- A strong team on the field, but not a lot of depth. If injuries occur, they could drop farther down than third place.
4. Pittsburgh Pirates- Not much separates the Pirates from the Cardinals. They can just as easily end up in second place as long as players stay healthy.
5. Chicago Cubs- Another season will come and go with the Cubs ending up in the cellar.
NL West:
1. Arizona Diamondbacks- With young players such as Adam Eaton, AJ Pollock, and Tyler Skaggs coming up through the ranks and veteran players such as Ian Kennedy and Aaron Hill still leading the way, Arizona should still keep first over their fellow divisional rivals.
2. San Francisco Giants- Last year's champs, I don't think can win it all unless players such as Lincecum step up to All-Star levels again.
3. Los Angeles Dodgers- Going on a spending spree of their own after last year's all-star break, they are hoping that Carl Crawford will once again be the player he used to be.
4. San Diego Padres- Once known as playing in one of the hardest parks to hit in, the Padres management brought in the fences to promote a bigger offensive explosion. Players such as Carlos Quentin should see and increase in power.
5. Colorado Rockies- Once again rebuilding and healing. Not much of an upside for the Rockies.

2012 MLB Predictions
Last year I thought the World Series would be Tigers and Cardinals...and I was wrong. Cardinals ended up winning against the Rangers in their first World Series appearance. It was a strong year of teams that haven't had many playoffs appearances to get to the playoffs (i.e. Rangers, Brewers, Diamondbacks) and a year where stellar pitching dominated the league. Justin Verlander won the pitching triple crown in the AL, where as youngster Clayton Kershaw did the same, sharing the wins category with Ian Kennedy. Matt Kemp was robbed of his MVP, while falling one home run short of becoming one of the few players in history to go 40/40 (homers/steals). This season should be just as fun since several of the top teams are so much closer in talent levels that ever before. And here they are...my predictions for 2012....

The Start Of A New Season
The start of a new season of football is here. Week one has passed and we have already been surprised. Tom Brady breaking the week one record for most passing yards in a game, a one hundred eight yard kick return, the broken streak of consecutive games played by future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning, and the Dolphins defense...gasping for air.One of the many things experts were wondering about, was how players would handle the first week of the season conditioning wise. With limited practices and conditioning, players could be expected to be gasping for air. The Dolphins showed signs of fatigue in the middle of the third quarter. From here the Patriots began to use a no huddle offense to exploit this and build on their lead.
Some teams and players performed their own voluntary practices during the lockout, but without strength and conditioning coaches and trainers, as well as some of the older players taking the time off completely to gain more rest time. This is turn made it harder for certain players to be in the condition they normally would start the season at. Although it is also believed that NFL teams have gone overboard with off season workouts which can induce injuries in the long run to players.
With the new season ahead, it should be interesting what else develops this season. With new changes such as kick offs being kicked from the thirty five yard line and new rules on hitting specialty players, the season should have it's own new flavor.

The Return Of Brett Favre?
As every football season passes, it seems to be tradition for Brett Favre to agonize over his decision to play again for another season. Of course for the last six years, he always chooses to come back for "just one more season" because he has that itch to win one more Super Bowl. With the lockout, it appeared that this would be the first off-season where we would hear no peeps from the Brett Favre camp. Guess we might be wrong. Word has leaked out from friends of his that since this season's pre-season won't be long, he believes it would be hard for rookie Christian Ponder to be ready in time for the season. With no established veteran quaterbacks on the Vikings roster (Joe Webb and Rhett Bomar), Brett's friends have leaked out that he believes he could be ready in time for another season. No official word has come out, nor has a large deal been made of this since there are no "Brett Favre tosses football with local high school wide receivers" sightings, but this could be the first steps of another comeback.
Telltale signs could be what the Vikings do in the very short off season. Quaterbacks such as Rex Grossman, Donovan McNabb, and Kerry Collins are all veterans that will be available this off season and have all been rumored to be interested in playing for the Vikings. If one of these quaterbacks signs with Minnesota, then Brett's chances of coming back are diminished quite a bit.
Taking a closer look at Brett Favre, he has no reason to come back. He has rings, he has a hall of fame career, and he owns many career NFL records already. This past season was bad enough with all the news headlines concerning his "sexting" of Jen Sterger. He should retire while he can, rather than see himself as a possible savior of Minnesota.
